Retired Col. Jaemeel RM Jaymalin, Al Hajj, was among the graduate of the Special Officers Course (SOCC) at Fort Magsaysay in 1962. He joined the Philippine Army afterwards and after retirement, became active into the different peace advocacy undertaking among Muslims and Christians alike until he was appointed to head the Payatas Special Operations Group by then Mayor Sonny Belmonte of Quezon City and later named as the Executive Director of the Quezon City Muslim Consultative Council. Today, Col. Jaymalin preferred to be called as peacemaker and and elderly Al Hajj among our brother Muslims, keeping the peace and advocating for development of the City to benefit both our Christian and Muslim brothers and sisters alike.

BAHAY NAKPIL BAUTISTA

The BAHAY NAKPIL BAUTISTA is a "living witness" of our history as a people, who loves peace and freedom, said Dr. Tess Obusan, the Curator of the "Bahay na Bato" as it is popularly known in Quiapo. Dr. Tess Obusan, a product of the University of the Philippines and author of a book about the history of Quiapo and the historical sites within its vicinity and "The Roots of Filipino Spirituality", is the younger sister of Mon Obusan, a National Artist (Dance). The house was built by the famous architect, Arcadio Arellano in 1914.

This house owned by Dr. Ariston Bautista, who was among the original member of the propaganda movement of the La Liga Filipina in Spain along with Juan Luna and other Filipino scholars, became a home to Julio and Gregoria Nakpil. Julio, who was appointed as the Vice-President Supremo of the Katipunan by Bonifacio, fell in love with the latter's widow after the latter's death. Gregoria De Jesus, otherwise known as "Oriang", the "Lakambini" of the Katipunan, keeper of Katipunan's secret, and Julio lived at Bahay Nakpil Bautista for the rest of their lives. One of their children took Gregoria's Ten Guildelines in Life by heart - Number 4: "Pagsikapang magkaroon ng ano mang karunungan na tumugon sa kanyang hilig upang pakinabangan ng bayan". Juan Nakpil, became the first National Artist in the field of Architecture.

Among the artifacts of interest at Bahay Nakpil Bautista were the sala set used by those who attended the only meeting of La Liga Filipina organized by Dr. Jose Rizal when he returned to the country. Andres Bonifacio was among them. Other than the sala set, there are two (2) reclining chairs where Dr. Jose Rizal was seated while waiting for those who attended and you can sit on it!

Artifacts that can be found inside the Bahay na Bato belongs to different personalities, who have linkage with the Katipunan. Ariston Bautista himself, like Rizal was imprisoned at Fort Santiago upon his return to the country. After the Filipino-Spanish and the Filipino-American War, he went back to practice his profession as a Doctor at the Philippine General Hospital.

On 2014 Bahay Nakpil Bautista shall celebrate its 100th year Anniversary as a "Home to the Katipuneros", a living witness of our history. Of all the houses or places declared historical site by the National Historical Institute, Bahay Nakpil Bautista maybe one of the most significant site. It represents not only a home to national heroes but, the very spirit of the Philippine Revolution itself - our identify as a people who loves unity, peace and freedom! Those who participated in the meeting came from the different walks of life with different religious belief, yet bonded together by a common cause. It was unfortunate that Dr. Jose Rizal was arrested afterwards, exiled to Dapitan and executed, leaving Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan no recourse but, to raise its arms against the Spaniards, the rest was history, the witness of which remains in this Bahay na Bato.

RH Bill at Aloha

Reproductive Health Bill Advocates have grown increasingly impatient over the delays in Congress, according to Dr. Junice Melgar, Occupy for RH spokesperson.

“There are only five session days for discussing bills remaining in Congress and our Legislators are wasting precious time by talking about boxing and conspiracy theories,” said Dr. Melgar. “These underhanded and cowardly tactics are hurting women and their families, and we will expose and protest against those who use.”

Occupy for RH is a campaign of the Reproductive Health Advocacy Network and other RH advocates to camp out at SB Park and hold daily demonstrations at the South Wing Gate of Congress calling on legislators to vote on the RH Bill within the year, was the subject of discussion at Balitaan sa Aloha Media Forum on November 30, 2011.

MITIS Promotes Global Competitiveness thru Japanese University Education

In this era where the world is getting smaller because of fast technological advancements, competition among college graduates in the global industry arena becomes tougher.

With this crucial consideration, MIT International School (MITIS), in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) – Muntinlupa Division and Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) Philippine Office, brings a forum on tertiary education to help high school students obtain undergraduate degrees of high quality and international standards.

The forum, with the theme “ Exploring the Opportunities for University Education in Japan for Gifted Students”, aims to present study opportunities and scholarships in top universities in Japan considering various routes, one of which is a six-year secondary education curriculum. Ultimately, the forum seeks to encourage the students to dream big and explore options and possibilities beyond the local universities towards rewarding and high-paying careers.

Kyoto University, Kyushu University, and Doshisha University are the key presenters in the activity. These schools pride themselves on being part of the Japanese government’s Project for Establishing Core Universities for Internationalization, also known as the G30 Program, along with 10 other universities in Japan.

The G30 Program is an initiative of Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) through Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). In line with this project, the 13 selected universities that received a grant from the Japanese government are expected and anticipated to be the country’s principal internationalization centers by bringing in more foreign students, providing high quality level of education, and creating a learning environment suited to students both from Japan and from other countries including the Philippines. The project also highlights and promotes the offering of classes in English, improved system of admission for foreign students, promotion of international cooperation, and nurturing of students, teachers, and researchers to achieve worldwide competitiveness.

MITIS, being a lead organizer and the host of the forum, believes that this is a good venue to introduce broader options for exceptional students by providing them with the information about admittance policies and criteria of prime universities overseas. With its K-12 curriculum, the school opens its enrollment for Grades 11 to 12 to students from local high schools as a six-year secondary curriculum is essential for admission to foreign universities such as those in Japan. MITIS also offers scholarship grants to poor yet deserving students as part of its social responsibility.

Top performing private and public schools particularly Science high schools within the National Capital Region have been invited to attend this special event. With the comprehensive presentations prepared by the selected universities’ outstanding professors and representatives, this occasion marks the beginning of understanding and interaction among the academic communities of Philippine high schools and Japan universities towards students’ guaranteed success here and abroad.

Leo Luga Zita has been a musician for almost three decades. He started performing playing rhythm guitar since high school and college days at St. Paul’s College in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental in the 90’s. He plays the lead guitar, rhythm and sings with a popular band in Cebu afterwards. Upbeat, pop, mellow and hard rock were his forte. He went to Singapore with the band and returned to the country about three (3) years ago. Now without a band, he again studied music and indulges into playing the Saxophone.

Performing solo, took a twist on how Leo Zita defines music. In his debut recording at Studio 26 in Lagro, Quezon City, you can feel the aura of his music, its heart and its soul.

How he blew the Saxophone and holds his breath for so long to express how he commands the notes with the instrument he have, redefines the meaning of the path he took for almost three decades. The Korea Women’s Association of the Philippines together with the Korean Students Associations in the Philippines with their relatives and friends, successfully held a concert for the benefit of the KOPINO FEATURING “EJ Park”! a musical genius in electric violin.

It has been reported that there are 10,000 “KOPINO” or “KOPINOY” (Korean Filipino) at present and their number continues to rise. It is ironic that it was the Korean themselves, who initiated a move on this issue, concerning the growing number of “KOPINO”. If there is a Filipina, however, who started this advocacy and convinced the Koreans to address the issue, it is none other than Bella E. Dimayuga of Bellestar Promotions. After 5 decades in the entertainment industry, Sister Bella Dimayuga now devotes most of her time developing talents to benefit not only the Filipinos, but other nations as well.

Then with the Japanese, where her Bellstar Promotions sent thousands of Filipino Entertainers in Japan. Now, spearheading the move to strengthen the Philippine-Korean relations by convincing the Koreans to recognize the issue on KOPINOYS.

The concert was entertainment as its best! With other Korean artists who arrived straight from Korea, it was a night full with music and entertainment. Nostalgic, magical, romantic and last but not least, delightful! With upbeat music that swayed some of the crowd to rise and dance with the music!

Among the performers who were present was the Songbird of Paranaque City Miss Geraldine Fame Flores, who rendered wonderful songs. In his speech, Mayor "Jun" M. Bernardo congratulated Amor Virata for People's Lider balanced news for eight years of publication and thanked Virata for People's Lider role of informing the public, especially the residence of Paranaque for its fearless, truthful and balanced reporting. The Philippines was removed from the US Government’s “Tier 2” list of countries with most cases of human trafficking after convicting several human traffickers and implementing tighter screening of departing Fiipino tourist. To quote its 2011 Trafficking in Persons Report: “the US State Department noted that while the Philippines “still does not fully comply with the minimum standards to eliminate trafficking, Manila is making significant effort to do so”.

The government could have not done it without the participation of the civil society. Like the “Bayanihan” concept, which he introduced to win the hearts and mind of the people in the government’s fight against insurgency while still the Chief of Staff of the AFP, now Commissioner Ricardo A. David, Jr. and the BID gave due recognition to the contribution of its partners in civil society in its fight against human trafficking.

Lolly R. Rivera’s active participation in BID’s effort to eradicate Human Trafficking, among others, was recognized during the 71st Anniversary of the BID. Lolly R. Acosta is the President of the NAAI Press Corps for more than a decade and the moderator of Balitaan sa Aloha, being held every Wednesdays 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Aloha Hotel.

KOPINOS: A BREWING ISSUE

One of the top issue concerning Korean-Filipino Relation are "Kopinos" (born to Koreans and Filipino women) who are abandoned by their Korean fathers without support for them or their mothers . Sun Star, in its March 13, 2011 edition said that there are a growing number of them: "Kopinos's problem is huge and sad, considering that there are around 10,000 of them in the Philippines and the authorities ought to take a closer look".

This growing sentiment of Filipino women should be look into and must be addressed. Our country is not that poor to be exploited to the extent that our women are merely being dumped with the responsibility of rearing their children sired by Koreans after being exploited. To quote one of those who posted in TOPIX, an open forum site in the net, to wit: "So, what's up with these Koreans? Are they so poor that they cannot support their women and children? Or, are they so superior that they do not want to associate themselves with those disadvantaged and poor Filipino women? As I understand it, most Koreans are quite racist as they believe they are a superior race."

We also believe that the Koreans are not that bad as others perceived them to be, like the stories we heard from old folks during world War II concerning abuses committed by the Koreans in the Japanese Imperial Army. Their voice should also be heard.

True to his word, right after he took his oath of office, CSC Chairman Saludo established the "PAMANANG LINGKOD BAYAN AND SCHOLARSHIP FUND" to provide scholarship for the dependents of civilian employees who died in line of duty. He advocated for the passage of the Salary Standardization Law III and in less than a year after he was appointed, SSL III was passed into law.

He was among the fifty-five (55) participants from fourty-five (45) countries who finished the special course given by the University, where six (6) former Presidents of the United States graduated. We are proud that Usec. Rivera made it to Harvard on his own.

Boston is the seat of educational and research institutions in the United States. It was in Boston where the first public school in the U.S. was established. During his stay in Boston, Usec. Rivera was invited in a simple get-together party organized by a group of Filipino-Americans, PAMANA.
